evaluation task 4 - How Did You Use New Media Technologies in the Construction, Research, Planning and Evaluation Stages

I used multiple new media technologies during the construction research and planning of my film. in research I watched multiple Psychological thriller trailers and also more specific towards school shooting based films for example I analysed the Elephant trailer, a film based upon the columbine school shooting. This became my main piece of research as it was the most subject specific, it inspired the slow pace and panning shots used within my trailer., to watch these I used YouTube, YouTube is a social media platform used to publish videos online for others to view. also whilst planning the film my team used Facebook to post a draft of our film here to receive feedback and see where we may be able to improve our film trailer, this was vital to the making of the trailer as it showed me where i could improve my work and make it better. As well as Facebook we used Facebook messenger as the main platform of communication between the team by using this it enabled us to make polls within the group to make big decisions and arrange the dates for filming. Within the construction of the film posters and magazine covers I used Photoshop to produce these products to make them look more professional and realistic, whilst using Photoshop i used many of the tool available upon it, such as the gradient tool to create the background for my Magazine cover, the magic wand to manipulate images, crop to resize and create new meanings within images, i manipulated texts by using multiple fonts and adding effects like a stroke on them to give them greater impact and attract attention. Whilst editing the trailer I used Adobe Premiere Pro, this is an editing software provided by the school, this software is also used by real movie making companies as it is a highly respected tool in the field, whilst editing I used a zoom feature whilst bringing the Production company logo to the foreground to add effect and link it in with the Psychological Thriller stereotypes demonstrated by the music. I used a steady pan slider whilst filming multiple shots used within the trailer, this was to make it look more professional and the slow pace of which it moved at gave a calm feel which was contrasted with shots of a gun and a character dressed in all black and with their face covered. I uploaded the film to YouTube which is a platform that allows anyone to post content online for others to view, I choose this medium over others such as Vimeo because it holds a lot more traction and is used by the demographic of which I was targeting with the trailer, however when I wanted to receive feedback upon drafts I posted these clips to Facebook as it is more interactive and provided the best results for the trailer. To film I had the option of a camera provided by the school but opted for an outside sourced Nikon D5200 with a Nikon 35mm lens, I chose this lens at it has a fixed focus which gives it a good depth of field. This was to create a more professional look and also by the use of a 35mm lens it gave it a more psychological thriller vibe to the trailer and made it have a better impact upon striking the preferred reading to the audience. I used Blogger to post throughout the production of y trailer , this is an online website that allows people to make Blogs upon whatever they want to.

evaluation task 3 - what have you learnt from your audience feedback?

from feedback I found that the way we first inserted texts into the picture didn't flow so we changed some music to make the words come in on drums and this made it look better and flow with the trailer more. The general feedback I received was good and positive, here is a screenshot of the Facebook post where the first draft was. I also found that the initial draft was too slow and lacked excitement usually associated with this particular genre, to amend this I decided to film more and add a chase scene in although still keeping the general pace of the trailer slow but with the added scenes adding to the emotional impact of the trailer on the audience.

I also found that people were drawn to the trailer as it was quite different and stands out due to the issues it confronts. As being about a school shooting is a very controversial topic and is very contemporary with recent events that have unfolded.

I chose to film and edit deliberately at a slow pace as this is a countertype of what someone would typically associate with the psychological thriller genre, upon receiving feedback I found that the pace needed to subtly increase with the action, as a result of this I have added more action scenes and changed the pace towards the end of the trailer.
juxtaposition of music

I chose a slow tempo of music as this combines well with the pace of the trailer and also gives an uncomfortable feel that audience reiterated back to me upon giving feedback.

The audience feedback also showed a great appreciation for the camera shot choices as they enjoyed the way the music flowed with the panning of the shots throughout the school.

The target audience of teens took very well to the trailer and majority said it was a film they could relate to through characters depicted and also the school feeling to it.

evaluation task 2

Evaluation task 2

How effective is the combination of my main and ancillary products?

I have produced a voiceover for this task and it will play over clips of the trailer, poster and magazine cover, I have done this to explain the synergy used across all three and speak on the effectiveness of the products.

I have attempted to use both stereotypical conventions of a psychological thriller as well as the conventions of the product itself. I have used synergy through all three products in using the same Font, Characters and location throughout. This would help with the promotion of the film as it will make the product more recognisable. This is powerful when marketing a film as if it hasn't got any links people may be confused and wonder if it is even for the same movie.

Within the three products I also used stereotypical thriller conventions, such as suspense, shock and scarring the audience. These were used to help attract our target audience of 18-24 year olds, I used this target audience because they are the main demographic who watch psychological thrillers.

I also challenged the conventions of a psychological thriller trailer as in many the antagonist isn’t shown but we based the trailer around the antagonist and kept them in the limelight by focusing all posters and magazine covers around them.  However by doing this it has made my trailer and posters more intriguing and also by the antagonist being a young adult themselves it also attracts our target audience of young adults to come and view the product.

The main use of synergy across all three products is the font we have used, we decided to use the impact font as it gave the right look to go with the school setting but also fits the psychological thriller genre well.

in the film poster I chose to place an image of the main antagonist above a gun and placed this over an enlarged image of the lockers inside the school, this is typical of the Psychological Thriller genre. I used the same font to use synergy across all my media products.

evaluation task 1 - In What Ways Does Your Media Product Use, Develop or Challenge Forms of Conventions from Real Media Products?

9 frame analysis

This is the Magazine cover I produced, I used image manipulation to layer the photo of myself over the background and make it stand out and grab the readers attention as it is the main focus point of the cover, this is standard practice as I found in my research. I used multiple fonts and text styles to make it look more like a real magazine cover. I used the same font as in the trailer for the Title of the film this is for synergy across the trailer, magazine cover and Poster.
This is the Poster I have chosen, I have based it off of the Shutter Island poster I done my research on. I have taken the inspiration for the main characters head to be above the location of which the film takes place. I have used image manipulation by combining three images to create this poster. by using the lockers as the background it gives the setting of in a school and the gun and blood covered face give the idea of killings occurring within the film.

This is the Splash Screen I produced for the trailer, this is a necessity as without it young children may view the trailer although it is unsuitable for their viewership.

This is the production company i have created by merging both groups logos together to create this, as this is presented in the shot it has a zoom and a loud white noise that increases coming to a sudden halt. this is a typical convention of a psychological thriller trailer.
this is the first close up shot of the gun at this point in the trailer the presence of the gun implants the idea of a shooting in the viewers mind. the slow pace of this shot gives it an underlying feel of fear and worry for the audience. I choose this shot as it gives hints yet doesn't give away the whole
including when the film will be released is a key convention in producing a trailer, to add this in I added a word each time the drum bangs. this is typical in film trailers as I found in my research.
Whilst analysing the Elephant trailer I found that they included many reviews as an attempt to draw in a bigger audience, this was also used in multiple other trailers as a result I have included this in mine.
I used this low angle shot to show the power of the antagonist, this is typical of psychological thrillers as often the fear is inflicted by the antagonists power over our protagonist.
Every trailer Shows their film name so I did the same, this uses the conventions associated with the Psychological Thriller genre.

This is a low angle shot to show the antagonist's power. This is a good way to end the trailer as it shows the protagonist in peril and leave us wondering if he dies or lives.

Planning - uses of social media

we used multiple social media platforms such as Snapchat, Facebook and Facebook messenger

we used Snapchat to send pictures to each other around the school of where we thought would be good locations to use in the production.

we used Facebook to promote the trailer and get feedback off friends and family about the product.

we used Facebook messenger to arrange when we can film and any other things we needed to discuss

planning - fonts and titles

we have decided to us the impact font because it is assertive and looks quite school like .
we tried multiple fonts and came to the conclusion that impact was the font best suited to our picture.
here is a screenshot of multiple fonts we trialled but they didn't make the cut.
